Little did I know that when I wrote a scene in Love’s Promises, the scene would become real life. https://deboraharmstrong.ca/product/loves-promises/
Quinn and Davina are spending a few days at the farm and Quinn wants to learn how to be a farmer. The scene is Davina’s reaction to Quinn when he walks into the kitchen covered in cow manure and showing the beginning of a black eye. He didn’t know how to deal with the attention of an affectionate cow.
When a cow wants what it wants, there’s no stopping it. Don’t put yourself between it and its goal because you’ll lose, and you may hurt more than your dignity. One day, this past fall, the men were sorting cattle. My adult son took it upon himself to block a heifer (female cow) from running past him. The heifer swung her head and hit the back of his hand, breaking several bones. His injury was more severe than Quinn’s, and he had to wear a cast for a few weeks. Although it wasn’t as humorous an incident as what Quinn experienced, we still chuckle when we think of that heifer and her swinging head, and the odds of her breaking bones.
Living on a dairy farm provides me with many ideas for my novels. I like to write about our cows, our farm, and what it’s like dealing with urban sprawl inching closer to us. My friends like to tell me stories, encouraging me to put something like “that” in one of my books.
However, I never expected us to re-enact a scene from one of my books. It shows me, once again, that anything can happen in life or on the printed page. Before we brush something off as being made-up or impossible, remember that these days, anything can happen.
So, if you ever find yourself in the path of a running cow, get out of the way. Fast.
Happy reading,
