Deborah's Diary

Wow! It’s still hot, and now we have the humidity. I’ve been spending my time in my basement office, trying my best to feel comfortable. Whenever I head up the stairs to get a coffee refill, it feels like I’m walking into a wall of heat. Is this heat hitting you the same way?

Life on the Farm

Our summer schedule is right on time. The wheat harvest is finished. The straw is baled, and second-cut hay is all done, too. The cows are still milking, and we have calves arriving almost daily.

I still get a thrill walking out to the maternity barn and discovering a newborn calf or a cow about to give birth. I take a travel mug of coffee with me if I decide to spend my time hanging around the barn to keep an eye on mom and calf.

Rubber Ducky Time

It’s about time! We finally got our hut tub fixed. It’s been two years waiting for replacement parts. On hearing that the hot tub was in working order, our two eldest grandkids came over to be the first in the water. They stripped on the patio and then got in the 80-degree water. Of course, I had to join them, so we played with our rubber duckies in the bubbles for an hour or so.

Hungry Hippos

My grandson is fascinated with hippos, and so our conversation centred on hippo farts (it’s a 5-year-old thing), enemies of hippos (lion, crocodile, and hyena) and what hippos eat (grass and vegetation near water), and how hippos mark their territory (with their poop).  This may be the YouTube video that ignited his interest https://youtu.be/PSKQ3ZNQ_O8

Writing Time

I managed to get make time for two full days of writing, which hasn’t happened in a while. I worked on a chapter for Bates, and then my attention turned to a short story I started quite some time ago. When I get stumped with one project, I move on to the next. I try to have two on the go so that I can keep writing.

I have a question for you. Do you read short stories, or do you prefer novels? My focus seems to be centring on short stories on characters from the Davina and Quinn series. I’d like to know if you would be interested in these stories. Please leave a comment or email me. I appreciate your opinions.

Our grandkids are coming over for a sleepover. We haven’t had them stay overnight, and they are looking forward to having supper with us and staying overnight. It’s not as though they live far away (next door to us). So, if they don’t settle, we can always take them home to sleep in their own beds. I’ll let you know how it works out.

Until then, enjoy your weekend and stay cool.

Happy reading,
