I came across this quotation today, “Smell the roses. Smell the coffee. Whatever it is that makes you happy,” by Rita Moreno. It’s true. We must take the time to enjoy the things that make us happy. However, sometimes we lose sight of what those things are. The following are a few of the simple things that make me happy.
I enjoy a steaming cup of strong coffee — its aroma, taste, and warmth. I happily accept any brew offered to me when I’m with friends, although I prefer to order an Americano when I find it on the menu. Ordering an Americano reminds me of travelling the globe with my best friend.
It’s comforting to share coffee, conversation, and maybe a cookie or two with a dear friend. Taking the time to enjoy each other’s company is the best gift we can give each other. If it’s not a visit over coffee, we call each other or send a text that makes us smile.
I am fortunate that my children are my neighbours. They drop by frequently to chat. I have a grandson who makes me smile. His hugs and kisses brighten the darkest day.
I take great pleasure in reading. Taking a timeout to dive into a hot and spicy romance is quick pick me up. I can give the book my full attention for the day, or I can pick a favourite passage and escape for a few minutes.
My husband. He makes me happy. Every morning he asks me how I am feeling. He asks me what my plans are for the day, and when we sit down in the evening to watch the news and Netflix, he asks about my day. We enjoy each other’s company. We talk about politics, the weather, farming, and our family. Sometimes we don’t have to say a word. Being in each other’s company is enough.
