First of all, you should never have to explain why you read romance novels. However, you can use the following five reasons:
Reading romance isn’t what it used to be
If you don’t read romance novels, you probably think of the dime-store paperbacks that your grandmother read, the covers showing a swashbuckling hero with a woman needing saving in his arms. Stories about marrying the billionaire boss, or the foreign prince, and couples flying in a private jet to exotic places. While this type of book still exists, romance novels cover a broad spectrum of genres: fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal, and LBGTQ novels. https://deboraharmstrong.ca/2018/09/29/book-review-lora-leighs-cross-breed/
Reading romance gives us realistic stories
Okay, so you can still read fantasy romances. However, some stories are more realistic. No longer does the heroine need a hero to come to her rescue. Often it is the heroine who saves the hero, most likely from his inner demons. And, how sexy is a man who is dark and dangerous and needs saving? Readers love diving deep into these stories and imagining themselves as the heroine. Similarly, readers can now immerse themselves in stories about workplace affairs (falling for the boss or a co-worker), meeting a stranger on a subway or a coffee shop (it does happen), or finding love on the internet (think of Match.com). If Jane in accounting can find love, there’s hope for the rest of us. Nothing against accountants or Jane. Romance isn’t just for two
Romance isn’t always wrapped in pretty paper and tied with a shiny bow. Today’s heroines and heroes can come with baggage or have a past: exes, children, in-laws, or a baby on the way. It’s how the characters deal with each other and their extras that make the story worth reading because romance is about more than love; it’s about relationships.
Romance is more than a kiss
You can pick the type of romance you want to read. It’s called the heat level, anywhere from a chaste kiss promising a happily ever after to sex scenes with multiple orgasms that last for pages upon pages. As the reader, you can choose what kind of spice to add to your day. Do you want a soft ahh, or a heart-racing, heated read that brings a blush to your face?
Romance offers a happy ending
Romances guarantee us a happily ever after or a happy for now ending. The hero and heroine are happy, in love, and look forward to a beautiful life together. No matter the trials and tribulations they have gone through in the story, the hero and heroine are guaranteed a reward. You can finish the book knowing their story has ended happily. Hopefully, you are happier knowing that they are.
